Simple, sheltered and quietly effective, this Open-Fronted Apex Bird Box is designed for species that prefer visibility, airflow and a clear escape route rather than an enclosed cavity. Robins, wrens, pied flycatchers, wagtails and similar birds naturally nest on ledges, among roots, in sheds, or tucked into dense vegetation rather than deep holes. This open-fronted design mirrors those preferences, offering protection from rain and wind while allowing birds to remain alert to their surroundings. Handmade in the UK from precision-cut European softwood, the box features thick wooden walls for insulation and an overhanging apex roof that sheds rain effectively. Drainage holes in the base allow any moisture to escape, helping keep nesting material dry and usable throughout the breeding season. The timber is treated with a non-toxic, water-based preservative that protects the wood while remaining safe for birds and other garden wildlife. A concealed rear fixing point allows the box to be mounted securely on trees, walls, sheds or fences without visible fixings. This is a versatile, general-purpose open nest box - ideal where enclosed hole boxes are unsuitable or already well catered for. Why it matters Open-fronted nesters are often overlooked in favour of traditional hole boxes, yet many declining garden birds rely on exposed but sheltered nesting spots that are disappearing as gardens become tidier and buildings more sealed. Providing an open-fronted box like this can help replace lost ledges, ivy tangles and sheltered nooks - especially in wildlife-friendly gardens where disturbance is low and cover is plentiful. As always, success depends on thoughtful siting rather than numbers alone. Where to site Position 1-3 metres above ground Choose a well-hidden spot among ivy, climbers, shrubs or hedging Avoid direct sun, heavy rain exposure and busy areas North-east or east-facing positions are often ideal Do not place close to feeders or high-traffic garden paths Clean only after the breeding season has finished. Selected for Wild Your Garden with guidance from Joel Ashton, this nest box supports birds that thrive when gardens are allowed to stay a little wild - offering shelter without forcing nature into a one-size-fits-all solution.
